Applying for D.C. Government Jobs: Practical Steps to Success
This course will:
- Present its participants with basic instruction on the development of a strong and competitive resume for applying for government jobs.
- Help participants to effectively match their specific skills and experiences to appropriate job openings.
- Equip participants with interviewing skills that will help them manage the process from preparation to the artful closing of an interview.
- Interview strategies and techniques.
- Help participants become familiar with the District of Columbia job application process.

Open Streets DC
 Join Mayor Muriel Bowser for the District's inaugural Open Streets DC along Georgia Ave. NW between Barry Pl. NW and Missouri Ave. NW. Nearly three miles of the avenue will be closed to motor-vehicle traffic, allowing residents to walk, bike along and in the roadway and enjoy a wide range of activities for all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. Mayor Bowser Calls On Congress to Grant DC Residents Their Full Democratic Rights by Making Washington, DC the 51st State
 On Thursday, September 19, 2019, Mayor Muriel Bowser testified before the House Oversight and Reform Committee at a hearing on the Washington, DC Admission Act (H.R. 51), the first House hearing on DC statehood in over 25 years. H.R. 51 has been cosponsored by a record 219 Members.
Below is the Mayor’s full testimony, as prepared for delivery.
"Cummings, Ranking Member Jordan, and all members of this esteemed Committee, thank you for hosting this historic hearing on H.R. 51, the Washington, D.C. Admission Act, to make Washington, DC the 51st state.
I want to especially thank our Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, who has championed equality for DC for her entire tenure, while skillfully delivering jobs, opportunity and greater self-determination.
I am Muriel Bowser, Mayor of Washington, DC, and I am honored to be here today to ask Congress to act upon the request of my residents to admit Washington, DC to join the United States of America as the 51st state..."

Ahead of Historic House Hearing, Mayor Bowser Launches DC Statehood Commercial
On Sunday, September 15, 2019, ahead of Thursday’s historic House hearing on the DC statehood bill (H.R. 51), Mayor Bowser launched a new DC statehood commercial, featuring DC veteran Antoinette Scott. The commercial, which is already airing in Washington, DC, Kentucky, and South Carolina, is part of the Bowser Administration’s education campaign to make more Americans aware of the injustices happening in the nation’s capital due to our lack of statehood.
“This commercial is going to make more Americans aware of a particularly disgraceful effect of our disenfranchisement – the fact that we have men and women fighting for our nation, defending our democracy abroad, and, yet, when they come home to Washington, DC, they are denied those very same democratic rights. Our servicemembers are denied voting representation in the Congress that decides when and whether to send them to war,” said Mayor Bowser. “Only through statehood can we correct this injustice and ensure all Washingtonians, including our veterans and servicemembers, are provided the voting representation we deserve.”
In the commercial, Scott highlights this particular injustice facing DC veterans: “I fought for my country, and I deserve the right to representation just like any other American, in any other state.”

Mariane Ibrahim Gallery moves to Chicago
Mariane Ibrahim does not fear change. Roughly seven years after founding her namesake gallery in Seattle, Ibrahim and her program officially begin their next act in Chicago this Friday, September 20, during the latest edition of Expo Chicago. Her new 5,000 square-foot space in the city’s West Town neighborhood effectively doubles the square footage of her gallery in the Pacific Northwest, while her presence further strengthens the Windy City’s increasingly influential standing in the international art market.
But like several gallerists who have gone on to great success, Ibrahim didn’t grow up dreaming of a career as an art dealer. She was born in Nouméa, the capital city of the French territory of New Caledonia, about 1,000 miles northeast of Brisbane, Australia. Her family moved to Somalia, where both her parents grew up, when she was five years old, then relocated to France three years later. Her early transitions through so many different cultures gave Ibrahim a keen understanding of how layered identity can be.
“I usually avoid the question, ‘where are you from?’, because what does that mean anymore, to be ‘from’ a place?” she mused to artnet News in the lead-up to her Chicago unveiling.

Athletics Kenya official to be inducted in US Hall of Fame
Barnaba Korir, Athletics Kenya (AK) director in charge of youth and development, is among six sports personalities set to be inducted to Iowa State Athletics Hall-of-Fame on Friday in the United States.
And AK president Jackson Tuwei led the athletics fraternity in congratulating Korir, who is also in the AK executive, saying he has been a formidable pillar in local athletics.
All the six will be inducted at a special ceremony at the Sukup End Zone Club in Ames, before being honoured at halftime during the Iowa State Cyclones verses Louisiana-Monroe American Football match on Saturday.

In partnership with DC Health and other major health care providers, the Anacostia Library is offering the Living Well Self Management Workshops.
