marijuana

by Mandy Paradise, Intervention Specialist Program Supervisor, OSPI

Let’s talk school discipline and substances. For decades, schools have taken a zero-tolerance approach to alcohol, marijuana, and other drugs. Did you know that students are experiencing significantly more exclusionary days for substance-related violations compared to other behavior violations? Washington State discipline data show that, during the 2016–17 school year, students were excluded from school an average of 12.4 days for marijuana... CLICK HERE to continue reading

Why Social Norm Campaigns Work

paw 1

Social Norm Campaigns, focus on positive messages pertaining to healthy attitudes and behaviors that are common among most people in a group. For example, rather than focusing on the fact that 5% of 10th graders are smoking cigarettes, focus on the fact that 95% of students in that grade are not smoking.
Such campaigns among youth may help them realize that they themselves are “part of the norm”.

paw 2

The campaign can also help people understand real numbers pertaining to behaviors, and help avoid moralistic messages, or scare tactics which have proven to be ineffective prevention methods, when talking about sensitive subjects.
Hoquiam Middle School, used data from the Healthy Youth Survey and tied in their school mascot to create a Social Norm campaign for their students. Similar campaigns can be done in your school and community.

Teaming Up to Prevent Teen Marijuana Use

teaming

In 2018, the Washington State Department of Health launched the You Can campaign to educate youth (12-17) about the health effects and consequences of using marijuana and encourage young people to pursue their future dreams and immediate personal goals. At its core, You Can is designed to empower youth by inspiring them to choose life, school, relationships, health, and safety over using marijuana. Youth can visit www.YouCanWA.org or like the campaign on Facebook and Instagram. As a trusted adult, you can also find tips on how to talk about marijuana with the teens in your life at www.StartTalkingNow.org or engage in the campaign by visiting our online toolkit.
