Gov. Evers Orders Flags to Half-Staff in Honor of Army Tech. 5th Grade John E. Bainbridge

MADISON — Gov. Tony Evers today ordered the flags of the United States and the State of Wisconsin to be flown at half-staff on Sunday, September 29, 2019 in honor of Army Tech. 5th Grade John E. Bainbridge.

Army Tech. 5th Grade Bainbridge, 23, of Sheboygan, was killed in action on December 2, 1942 while serving with Company C, 128th Infantry Regiment, 32nd Infantry Division, in the Australian Territory of Papua, present-day Papua New Guinea. Postwar efforts failed to locate or identify his remains, which were later interred at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial in the Philippines. His remains were disinterred on Feb. 22, 2017 and sent to the Defense POW/MIA Accountability Agency laboratory for analysis. Army Tech. 5th Grade Bainbridge was accounted for on June 24, 2019.

“We honor the life and the service of Army Tech. 5th Grade Bainbridge as he returns home to his final resting place here in Wisconsin,” said Gov. Evers. “My thoughts are with his family and community as they say goodbye after a lifetime of searching for closure. The people of Wisconsin and his family will continue to remember his legacy and honor his courageous service.”

Bainbridge will be buried with full military honors at Roselawn Memorial Park in Monona this Sunday at 11 am.
