Geophysical and Non-destructive Evaluation in US Transportation Infrastructure

FastTimes

FHWA teamed with the Nondestructive Evaluations (NDE) Community to participate in a special issue of FastTIMES, a technical magazine of the Environmental and Engineering Geophysical Society (EEGS), focused on the use of geophysical and NDE technologies in highway infrastructure applications.

The articles in the special issue showcase effective examples of applying geophysical and NDE methods and technologies within transportation – from project delivery to managing our transportation infrastructure.

The issue includes 10 articles highlighting a variety of case studies and technological applications. A few examples are summarized below.

Exploration Geophysics and Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE): Adding Value to Transportation Infrastructure Condition Assessment from Project Delivery to Asset Management

The foreword to the special issue discusses four broad use cases where sensing and monitoring are commonly applied.

Non-destructive Pavement Evaluations at Minnesota Department of Transportation (Equipment and Applications)

This article highlights the wide range of MnDOT NDE equipment used for comprehensive and complete pavement evaluations, and its capabilities along with examples of each equipment.

Applications of NDE for Steel Highway Infrastructure

This article takes a look at how nondestructive evaluations play a vital role in inspection and testing and how NDE of steel members for aging infrastructure and new construction are particularly valuable.

Combining Utility Locating Technologies Oregon Department of Transportation Case Study

Read how ODOT used funds from a Utility Investigation Technologies grant to establish a subsurface utility engineering (SUE) program and conduct an investigation using Time Domain Electromagnetic Induction and Multi-Channel Ground Penetrating Radar on an ODOT project.

20 Years of Geophysical Services for the NCDOT

This paper provides example case studies of some of the geophysical methods employed by NCDOT to help meet their subsurface exploration needs.
