The holidays bring out our best

holidays

On behalf of everyone in the Office of the County Executive, I wish you and your loved ones a happy and healthy holiday season.

This time of year, Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day, reminds us as Prince Georgians that we are at our best when we are extending a helping hand to others. Our residents and employees stretch themselves and their personal budgets to collect toys, coats, food and other items for the least fortunate among us.

One example is the partnership between the Prince George's police and fire departments and the U.S. Marine Corps to distribute 50,000 toys to 25,000 needy children. I am grateful and never take for granted this generosity by our employees in donating time and money to individual families and charitable organizations including Toys for Tots, the Public Safety Assistance Program and the United Way Combined Charities.

I appreciate and thank our first responders in police, fire and corrections, who take time away from their families to keep Prince George’s County safe. We are grateful for their dedicated service.

I extend my gratitude and honor to the families and friends of our United States military, especially those who are celebrating the holidays without a loved one this year. Whether your loved ones are near or far, they are never far from our thoughts.

So as we celebrate at events like the National Tree Lighting (above) or the annual Red and Gold Holiday Gala for seniors (below), let us remember those in need and all of those who give selflessly throughout the year. Let’s carry that spirit into the New Year.

Happy holidays, Prince George’s County.

County Executive Baker joined U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D) as she announced the $390 million appropriation that will ensure the consolidation of the FBI and advance the relocation  to Prince George's County or Fairfax County, VA. Two of the three sites in contention are Landover and Greenbelt. The other site is Springfield in Fairfax. County Executive Baker urged residents, elected officials and business leaders to remain "all in" to attract the project to Prince George's. View the video.
