Join newly established MWD, CPT and Geophysics Users Groups

If you are interested in improved geotechnical site characterization and Advanced Geotechnical Methods in Exploration (A-GaME), then you should take part in the newly established Geo-Industry Technology Users Groups. Three joint industry groups have been created in cooperation with FHWA, Geo-Institute, DOTs, Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) and Transportation Research Board (TRB) Committees AKG20 and AKG60 to address users’ needs.

Geophysics Users Group: The group will be undertaking a launch project, DIGGS for Geophysics, that will contribute to the ASCE/DIGGS XML schema by incorporating geophysical data. The ambitious goal of the project is to develop a fully functional geophysical module in DIGGS in about one year, in partnership with the ASCE-GI Engineering Geology and Site Classification Committee.

Cone Penetration Testing (CPT) Users Group: The group provides regular educational presentations on CPT applications and case studies, and is working to develop an E-Circular that will serve as a comprehensive resource to CPT users.

Measurement While Drilling (MWD) Users Group: MWD technology is used widely in the U.S. for monitoring foundation installation, but much less frequently for subsurface exploration purposes. The group will take on projects such as completing an MWD implementation guide and working on a U.S. standard for the technology, as well as providing education and sharing information about the technology among members.

If you are interested in these groups, join the monthly virtual meetings:

  • Geophysics on the second Tuesday of the month at 3:00 p.m. ET
  • CPT on the last Tuesday of each month at 3:00 p.m. ET
  • MWD on the third Wednesday of each month at 3:00 p.m. ET

The meetings are held via Microsoft Teams, which will also be used to house information generated by the groups. For more information visit the Geo-Industry Technology Users Groups web page or contact Derrick Dasenbrock, FHWA Resource Center, at derrick.dasenbrock@dot.gov.

Bring Your A-GaME, Massachusetts

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has embraced the A-GaME technologies for improved quality and quantity of geotechnical data. In an article published in the Boston Society of Civil Engineers Section (BSCES) newsletter, Mary Nodine, P.E., GEI Consultants, and Jennifer Rauch, P.E., MassDOT, describe the agency’s A-GaME implementation and highlight two recent case studies – one implementing CPTs and the other implementing geophysics.

A-Game Webinars

Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) is hosting and distributing recordings of the 2020-2021 winter webinar series, featuring the FHWA A-GaME on its YouTube Channel.

The webinars feature a variety of topics related to proven, effective exploration methods and practices for enhanced, effective site characterization that reduce project risks, improve quality and accelerate project delivery.
