Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

As we prepare for a safe return from February Break, DCPS families are reminded to administer their rapid COVID test on Sunday, February 27 and upload their results to dcpsreopenstrong.com/safereturn by 9:00 p.m. on Sunday.

If you are not able to locate the rapid test that was sent home with your child last week, remember that free rapid tests are available at sites across DC, including at eight COVID Centers (open Saturday and Sunday) and nine libraries (open Saturday).

We had a fantastic response from families in returning from Winter Break and continue to have a strong response from our Pre-K families with weekly testing. Because of this commitment to our students, educators, and each other, we have been able to keep schools and classrooms open and give our young people the school year they deserve. Let's keep it going.

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser

Nomination Statement

Today, in response to President Joseph R. Biden’s nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court of the United States, Mayor Bowser released the following statement:

“Today, at the intersection of Black History Month and Women’s History Month, we celebrate the historic nomination of Ketanji Brown Jackson to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States. Born in DC and currently serving on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, Judge Jackson is blazing new trails for young Black girls in DC and across the nation. She is a brilliant jurist who is more than ready to make history and put our nation on a stronger path forward as the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court.

“We applaud President Biden on his historic nomination and urge a swift and smooth confirmation in the Senate. For generations, Black women have been at the forefront of civil rights movements, fulfilling the charge of a Supreme Court Justice – fighting to ensure the promise of equal justice under the law. It is time, past time, to have a Black woman serve on our nation’s highest court, and in doing so, build a Supreme Court that better represents America.

“At a time when Americans continue to reckon with the past, present, and future of our nation, this nomination stands as a beacon of hope and a testament to the importance of representation. It also stands as a stark reminder that the 700,000 Americans living in Washington, DC will not be represented in the Senate’s confirmation process – a wrong that can only be righted by making Washington, DC the 51st state. But as this nomination proves, we are not done moving toward a more perfect union, and in DC, we are not done fighting for full access to our nation’s democracy.”

Register for the HerStory 5K

HerStory 5K

In celebration of Women's History Month, Mayor Bowser invites residents to celebrate the history making women of our nation’s capital by joining in the 4th Annual FITDC HerStory 5K, which will be held in-person at Freedom Plaza on Saturday, March 19 at 9:00 a.m.

The FITDC HerStory 5K is a Women’s History Month tradition, hosted by the DC Department of Parks and Recreation that routinely draws over 2,000 participants from all eight wards. Last year, when the in-person event was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a virtual 5K was held and over 2,500 participants signed up to run in their own neighborhoods.

A commemorative HerStory 5K t-shirt and runner’s bib will be provided to all participants while supplies last, courtesy of AETNA. Learn more and register at herstory5k.com.
