Spotlight: COVID-19 prevention toolkits for schools

Front cover of the Project SafeSchools COVID-19 school testing toolkit

COVID-19 vaccination, testing, and contact tracing all play a role in efforts to help K–12 students, teachers, and staff stay healthy.

As part of its We Can Do This campaign, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has created a school communities toolkit to increase confidence in and uptake of COVID-19 vaccines.

The HHS toolkit contains a variety of resources that school district leaders, teachers, parents, and school supporters can download, print, and share at their convenience.

Strategies to mitigate the risk for COVID-19 transmission in schools play a key role in efforts to help students, teachers, and staff stay safe and healthy.

Project SafeSchools, an ongoing initiative led by the Johns Hopkins Center for American Indian Health (JHCAIH), offers culturally appropriate materials that promote a layered approach to maintaining safe learning environments. Those materials include a COVID-19 school testing toolkit (PDF, 12.4 MB, 40 pp), which explains how to:

  • Implement a testing program that appropriately meets a community’s needs
  • Collect, manage, and distribute test results
  • Conduct contact tracing

The Project SafeSchools toolkit also provides examples of school-based testing programs in action, a school testing checklist, a sample consent form, and more.

Health observances

Colorectal cancer awareness

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and Blue Beads Day is on March 24. Both health observances highlight the importance of colorectal cancer screening.

According to the American Indian Cancer Foundation (AICAF), colorectal cancer is a leading cause of death among American Indians and Alaska Natives. Various types of screening tests are available to help find pre-cancerous growths in the colon before they have had a chance to spread. However, colorectal cancer screening rates have decreased since the pandemic began.

Help reverse that trend by sharing AICAF’s infographic encouraging people to prioritize colorectal cancer screening (PDF, 8.8 MB, 1 p). Also, wear blue on Blue Beads Day as a show of support for efforts to raise colorectal cancer awareness.

March is National Nutrition Month

The Community Outreach & Patient Empowerment Program (COPE), a non-profit organization, plays a leading role in 2 initiatives to promote healthy eating in Navajo Nation.

People are more likely to incorporate fruits and vegetables into their diets when produce is affordable and easily accessible. To that end, COPE’s Healthy Navajo Stores Initiative (PDF, 16 MB, 57 pp) works with small stores and community partners to promote consumption of produce and traditional Diné foods.

Additionally, COPE’s Fruit & Vegetable Prescription Program (PDF, 218 KB, 1 p) collaborates with clinic staff, community health workers (CHWs), and local retailers to promote healthy eating. Each month, eligible Navajo Nation residents who agree to participate:

  • Meet with a CHW to learn about nutrition
  • Receive a voucher to buy fresh produce and traditional foods at local stores
