Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

This Saturday, the DC Emancipation Day parade and concert is back! I hope you will join us on Freedom Plaza for an afternoon of music, food, fireworks, and fun.

We'll kick off the celebration with a parade at 2:00 p.m. and then the concert will continue throughout the afternoon and evening.

DC Emancipation Day

Every year, DC Emancipation Day is a celebration of the people who fought to end slavery as well as those who continue to fight for full access to American democracy. This year, we look back on 160 years since April 16, 1862 when, eight months before the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, President Lincoln signed the District of Columbia Compensated Emancipation Act, freeing over 3,100 enslaved Washingtonians.

I hope to see you on Saturday, and you can learn more about this year's celebration at dcemancipationday.com.

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser

Get Vaccinated & Boosted

COVID Centers

DC residents are reminded that COVID Centers are open in all eight wards. At all of the COVID Centers, residents have access to vaccinations, boosters, take-home rapid antigen tests, PCR tests, and KN95 masks. There is no appointment needed and all services and supplies are free.

Find the days and hours of the COVID Centers HERE

Residents are also reminded that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is now recommending a second booster dose for individuals 50 and older, as well as certain individuals who are immunocompromised and at higher risk for severe COVID-19.

Eligible individuals who received their initial booster dose of either the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines on or before December 14, 2021, can now receive a second booster of either vaccine.

Additionally, adults who received a primary vaccine and booster dose of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine on or before December 14, 2021 may now receive a second booster dose using an mRNA (Pfizer and Moderna) COVID-19 vaccine.

There are four easy ways to get your vaccine or booster in DC:

  • Visit a walk-up vaccine clinic or COVID Center.
  • Make an at-home vaccination appointment by calling 1-855-363-0333.
  • Make an appointment with your health care provider.
  • Find other opportunities to get vaccinated by visiting vaccines.gov.
