Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

Earlier this week, we heard from Officer Brock, who was born and raised in DC, about what the Metropolitan Police Department's Cadet Corps program has meant for her life:

Officer Brock

I want more women and DC residents like Officer Brock to consider careers at MPD. That's why I have been proud during my time as Mayor to grow the cadet program — from 20 cadets in 2015 to 150 cadets in 2022.

The cadet program is one of the most effective tools we have for hiring and retaining DC residents and women at MPD. If you are unfamiliar with the program, it is a specialized program for young Washingtonians (seniors in high school up to age 24) to serve part-time as uniformed, civilian employees. Members of the Cadet Corps program are paid a salary, earn up to 60 free tuition credits, and get on track to enter MPD’s Police Officer Recruit Program at the Metropolitan Police Academy.

In terms of hiring more women at MPD, we're making progress:

  • The current cadet class is 47 percent women.
  • The current recruit class is 30 percent women.
  • And the last recruit class to get sworn in, at the end of last year, was 52 percent women – all DC natives.

Let's keep pushing. For more information about the MPD Cadet Corps program, visit joinmpd.dc.gov.

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser

Reminder: COVID Centers Still Open

COVID Centers

DC residents are reminded that COVID Centers are open in all eight wards. At all of the COVID Centers, residents have access to vaccinations, boosters, take-home rapid antigen tests, PCR tests, and KN95 masks. There is no appointment needed and all services and supplies are free.

Find the days and hours of the COVID Centers HERE

Residents are also reminded that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is now recommending a second booster dose for individuals 50 and older, as well as certain individuals who are immunocompromised and at higher risk for severe COVID-19.

Eligible individuals who received their initial booster dose of either the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines on or before December 8, 2021, can now receive a second booster of either vaccine.

Additionally, adults who received a primary vaccine and booster dose of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine on or before December 8, 2021 may now receive a second booster dose using an mRNA (Pfizer and Moderna) COVID-19 vaccine.

There are four easy ways to get your vaccine or booster in DC:

  • Visit a walk-up vaccine clinic or COVID Center.
  • Make an at-home vaccination appointment by calling 1-855-363-0333.
  • Make an appointment with your health care provider.
  • Find other opportunities to get vaccinated by visiting vaccines.gov.

For more information on COVID-19 vaccination, testing, and COVID Center hours and locations, visit coronavirus.dc.gov.
