Fee Adjustments Coming to Kitsap County Solid Waste Facilities in June
May 10, 2022
The Olympic View Transfer Station – Kitsap’s primary intermediate handling facility for solid waste – celebrates its 20-year anniversary of operation in June. With that celebration, also comes the expiry of the original contract with Waste Management to design, build, and operate the facility, as well as transport and dispose of waste by rail to Waste Management’s Columbia Ridge Landfill. “On June 1st, we begin a new agreement with Waste Management, and the County’s costs increase overnight,” said Piercy. “Solid waste fees generate more than 95% of the funding necessary to keep the utility operational,” added Piercy.
The Olympic View Transfer Station – situated in the Olympic View Industrial Park near Bremerton national Airport – opened in 2002, in response to the closure of the adjacent Olympic View Sanitary Landfill. Since the landfill closure, there are no active operating landfills in Kitsap County. Piercy notes the need for improvements and enhancements to the site.
“Since 2002, significant growth in material, and traffic demands at the transfer station shows the need for investment in the facility’s future,” said Piercy. The County intends to install a second compactor next year and make improvements to the rail yard in the coming few years to keep up with the demand and avoid equipment-related disruptions to service.
In addition to the improvements at Olympic View, the Solid Waste Division is working toward an expansion to the Silverdale Recycling and Garbage Facility, and a second Household Hazardous Waste Facility in the new North Kitsap Service Center. Both projects are slated to break ground in the near future. More information on these projects is online at kcowa.us/project.
