Kenmore, WA - On May 16, 2022, the Kenmore City Council unanimously voted to adopt the first City of Kenmore Climate Action Plan (CAP). The CAP establishes actions the City and community can take to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and reach carbon neutrality by 2050 and provides strategies to adapt to future climate change impacts. The strategies and actions in the CAP include five focus areas: Buildings & Energy, Transportation & Land Use, Consumption & Materials Management, Natural Systems and Water Resources, and Community Resilience & Wellbeing.
Developing a Kenmore Climate and Environmental Action Plan including water, air, forest, and habitat restoration has been a top goal of the council since 2020 and is the result of a 2 year long research, development, and community engagement process. The process brought together city staff, residents, and other stakeholders to advise and offer input on the goals of the plan. Through virtual community workshops and open houses, online surveys, and in-person outreach, the City led a comprehensive engagement process with the goal of hearing from as many community members as possible.
“We are excited about the passage of our Climate Action Plan as a great first step in our effort to be a climate and environmental leader among midsize cities in the region,” said Kenmore City Councilmember Debra Srebnik.
With the plan now adopted, additional staffing and other new resources will be needed to begin implementation. Discussions on how to add these resources and what CAP components will be implemented first will take place during the 2023-2024 biennium budget discussions later this year.
Continued participation from residents, businesses, and community leaders will also be required to achieve the CAP goals. “It’s up to each and every one of us to do our part to ensure a healthy planet for future generations,” said Deputy Mayor Melanie O’Cain. “I’m proud to be a part of the first Kenmore City Council to pass a Climate Action Plan. The time to act is now and this is a critical investment in our future.”
A finalized version of the Climate Action Plan will be available soon at www.kenmorewa.gov/CAP. Community members interested in learning more about how they can support the goals of the Climate Action Plan can sign up to receive email updates here, and can visit the CAP website often for updates and opportunities for education and engagement.
