Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

Today is National Gun Violence Awareness Day. We know the urgency to end gun violence. I feel the urgency every single morning when I wake up and every time I am alerted about a victim of gun violence in our city. Americans nationwide feel the urgency each time we reckon with another mass shooting. Gun violence is now the leading cause of death among children and teens in the U.S.

Still, I do believe that gun violence is a solvable problem. I believe we can build a better, safer path forward and that we can prevent future generations from experiencing the repeated traumas that gun violence inflicts on our communities.

Today, we launched 202 for Peace, a summer-long, citywide gun violence awareness campaign that will empower community members, connect vulnerable residents to services and young people to safe activities, and provide a platform for the families of victims to voice a shared and common vision of peace. At today's 202 for Peace kickoff, we heard from Crystal McNeal, the mother of 11-year-old Davon McNeal, who was shot and killed in 2020 after leaving a community peace event. Crystal has been through the unimaginable; but, still, she is using her voice to advocate for peace and for a safer DC.

Speaker

I know that there are many people in our community who want to get involved in local and national work to end gun violence. 202 for Peace is an invitation to join us in this work. If you're looking for a way to get involved, I encourage you to go check out 202forPeace.dc.gov to learn more and, more importantly, to find an event to attend where you can meet like-minded Washingtonians who believe in a better path forward and a safer, stronger DC.

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser

Tomorrow: FITDC @ BLM Plaza

FITDC BLM Plaza

Tomorrow, on Saturday, June 4 at 9:30 a.m., join Mayor Bowser and FITDC as we commemorate two years since the creation of Black Lives Matter Plaza. The event will feature speakers, a group workout, a live DJ, healthy food and drink options, and vendors representing local Black-owned businesses.

On June 5, 2020, Mayor Bowser unveiled the iconic art installation on the two-block stretch of 16th Street NW that leads to the White House. The iconic mural was created overnight by local artists, the Department of Public Works, and the MuralsDC team. Today, it is a permanent monument.
