Spotlight: COVID-19 vaccine boosters

Getting all of the recommended COVID-19 vaccine boosters continues to be the best option for protecting our families and communities from severe illness.

Everyone age 5 and older who has completed their initial COVID vaccination series should get a booster shot to stay protected.

Moreover, elders and immunocompromised people are now eligible to receive two booster shots.

Health observances

July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month

In observance of National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, share the link to a webinar hosted recently by National Network to Eliminate Disparities in Behavioral Health.

Titled Data 101 Workshop, the webinar is intended to help community-based organization staff members better understand:

  • How qualitative and quantitative data differ
  • When to use qualitative or quantitative research methods

Also, encourage people in your community to visit the CMS Division of Tribal Affairs behavioral health website for help locating a service provider and preparing for appointments.

New campaign about the dangers of vaping

U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently launched Next Legends, a campaign to educate Native youth ages 12–17 about the negative effects of vaping on one’s physical, mental, and spiritual health.

To that end, Next Legends offers resources to help youth quit vaping. The campaign also runs culturally tailored advertisements on YouTube, social media, billboards, radio, and television.

Community Crisis Response Partnerships

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) funds are available to create or enhance mobile mental health crisis response teams in high-need communities. Grantees will be expected to use a SAMHSA best practice toolkit.

Twelve cooperative agreements will be awarded for projects lasting 4 years or less. Tribes and tribal organizations are encouraged to apply.

Public Health Nursing Case Management: Reducing STIs

Indian Health Service funds are available for case management models that rely on public health nurses to increase access to care and reduce the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in American Indian and Alaska Native communities.

Ten cooperative agreements for a 5-year performance period will be awarded. Tribes, tribal organizations, and urban Indian organizations are eligible to apply.

USET Webinars on Native Psychological Brilliance

United South and Eastern Tribes, Inc. (USET), a tribal behavioral health ECHO, hosts a Reclaiming Native Psychological Brilliance webinar on the fourth Tuesday of every month at 2 pm Eastern. Native Psychological Brilliance refers to the intelligence, strengths, balance, innate resources, and resilience of Native people.
