You've probably heard by now, but on June 14th, CAO Don Ashton notified the BOS that he will be stepping down to resign from his position in March 2023. |
While the Board is actively involved in the recruitment process, recognizing that the next County CAO is perhaps the most important decision we will make, I would be remiss if I didn't state how conflicted I am. I remain delighted that Don will be moving onto the next phase of his life, as he richly deserves it, but it is hard to imagine our County without him at the helm.
Don has been the right man for the job at the right time, and he has successfully led El Dorado County through perhaps our most difficult chapter with his calm, strong, ethical and inspired leadership. He will be leaving our County in a strong financial position with healthy reserves to weather the current unstable economic climate, has worked with the BOS to found our local government on the principles of good governance, has made tremendous progress in ensuring a stable workforce and a more robust investment in infrastructure while moving boldly toward enhanced vegetation management and resiliency measures for our County. What more could we ask for?
I remain optimistic that what blesses one, blesses all, and that we will find the right next CAO. Nearly 7 years as the CAO is a tremendous gift to our County. Until March 2023, there is no doubt Don will continue to shepherd El Dorado County with strong leadership and fierce love for our County for which we remain inordinately grateful.

On Monday, June 27, Senator Brian Dahle brought forward and unveiled a dedication to slain EDSO Deputy Brian Ishmael to be placed on Highway 50 in memory and gratitude for his service and sacrifice to El Dorado County. Fitting and beautiful. |
JULY 11-22: Camino Safety Project
 The Camino Safety Project is moving along and the new undercrossing road will intersect Carson Road at the Carson Court intersection. Carson
Road and the west end of Carson Court will need to be lowered by approximately three feet and
reconstructed at the proposed new intersection. A new east connection to Carson Court is open to
traffic.
Caltrans has requested a full closure of Carson Road IN THE PROJECT AREA (seen in red above) in the interest of public safety. Closing Carson Road during this construction will significantly lessen the length of time to complete the new intersection. Traffic control signs will be installed to detour traffic onto US 50 around this Carson Road closure and is anticipated to take place from JULY 11 - JULY 22.
Motorists are advised to slow down through the work zone and expect delays during this
construction period. Motorists are also advised to allow extra time when traveling through the
work zone in order to arrive at their destinations on time. Businesses located on Carson Road
and Carson Court will have continual access and are anticipated to remain open during this time.

 El Dorado County’s Department of Transportation (DOT) will be performing road work on Mosquito Road from 0.6 miles north to 0.8 miles south of the Mosquito Road Bridge for tree removal, bridge maintenance, and north roadway tie-in work. The work requiring road closure within these limits is anticipated to begin July 5, 2022 and continue through August 8, 2022.

Every 5 years, the BOS is required to convene a committee to review our County Charter and make recommendations on potential changes. On June 14th, the BOS approved who will represent our 5 districts on the Charter Review Committee, and I am excited to welcome former Clerk of the BOS, Jim Mitrisin and former Executive Director of El Dorado Transit, Mindy Jackson, as the member/alternate for District 3!
Also on June 14th, the BOS weighed in on topics the committee might review, recognizing that the committee is autonomous and has the freedom to chose their own areas of review.
The BOS recommendations were: 1) Consider any possible Grand Jury reports; 2) Examine an additional third term in office for Board members excluding current sitting Board members; 3) Examine staggered terms for Elected Department Heads; 4) Align the County Charter with County Ordinance with regards to the Civil Service Commission; 5) Examine increasing the number of Board members from five (5) to seven (7) members; 6) Examine term limits for Elected Department Heads and whether certain Elected Department Heads should be appointed rather than elected; and 7) Direct the Budget Ad Hoc Committee to review Proposition 172.
