Prince George’s County continues to mourn the loss of Police Officer First Class Jacai Colson as hundreds of citizens and supporters turned out for a vigil on Sunday, March 20, 2016 at Prince George’s County police headquarters. The vigil was organized by the police department and was a time of healing for the community. To the left is one of several posters sent to the District III police station by students at Kenmoor Middle School. Click here to see the full gallery. Cigna, one of the County's primary health care providers, recently announced they will provide free telephone consultations to County residents through a help line. Residents can call a toll-free number and talk with counselors about the tragic death of Officer Colson. Residents can call 1-866-912-1687 24 hours a day through March 31.

Senator Barbara Mikulski received a touching tribute for her trailblazing work and service in the U.S. Congress and Prince George’s County Department of Family Services Associate Director Jackie Rhone received the highly coveted 2016 Gladys Noon Spellman Public Service Award. The awards were presented during the 31st Annual Prince George’s County Women’s History Month Luncheon on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 . 

Other awards went to: Suitland High School Student Anthony Thornton, who received the 2016 Gladys Noon Spellman Scholarship, valued at $2,000 and Prince George’s County Department of Public Works and Transportation Associate Director Gwendolyn Clerkley (above right) received the 2nd Annual Women In Government “WInG” Award given to a female Prince George’s County government employee who is innovative and informative; inspirational and influential. More than 170 participants attended interfaith domestic violence training

The Prince George’s County Department of Family Services, Domestic Violence and Human Trafficking Services Division, in partnership with State's Attorney Angela Alsobrooks, held an Interfaith Collaborative Domestic Violence Training for approximately 170 attendees at Ebenezer A.M.E. Church in Fort Washington, MD on Tuesday, March 8, 2016. The event provided faith based leaders, non-profit and advocacy providers with knowledge about the dynamics of intimate partner violence, how to identify red flags, and resources for victims and survivors. Register for Spring 2016 "Clean Up, Green Up"

Help maintain your green neighborhood by joining us for a day of cleaning, weed removal and mulching on April 30, 2016. This one-day, county-wide landscape beautification effort is more than a decade old. The County’s Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) provides free plant material with the promise that community groups will plant in public spaces, including schools, streetscapes, neighborhood entrances, and municipal centers. 

The event will take place rain or shine. Registration is open through April 22. Supplies will be available for pick up on Wednesday April 27, 2016 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on April 28 and 29 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pickups are at the D'Arcy Road Maintenance Facility. Register online or contact:

County home to several 2016 state championship teams

Prince George’s County Public Schools’ (PGCPS) Office of Athletics has three new state championships to add to the list of recent accomplishments.

On March 5, Eleanor Roosevelt High School senior Chibueze Onwuka won the 4A/3A 220-pound weight class state championship and Central High School senior Klijah Mitchel won the 2A/1A 195-pound weight class state championship during the Wresting Individual State Championships.

On March 12, Forestville High School won the class 1A girls’ basketball state champion and Largo High School won the class 2A girls’ basketball state championship. 

The boys' basketball team from Eleanor Roosevelt High School won the class 4A boys' basketball state championship. Congratulations to all of our teams!
