 Review results of engineering tests for proposed wetlands restoration at Point No Point
Save the date to attend an information session Thursday, Aug. 25 to review engineering test results for Mid Sound Fisheries Enhancement Group's proposed restoration of wetlands at Point No Point Light Station and County Park.
Please register in advance here for either the afternoon session from 3 to 4:30 p.m. or the evening session from 6 to 7:30 p.m. These will be held both in person at the Greater Hansville Community Center, 6778 Buck Lake Road NE, and via Zoom. The same content will be presented at each event. Everyone is welcome!
Jessica Cote, lead project engineer of Blue Coast Engineering that is partnering with Mid Sound Fisheries on the project, will share results of recent engineering studies and groundwater testing data. The next steps in the project will also be reviewed, including additional benchmarks needed before the feasibility and conceptual design phase of the project is complete in 2023.
Mid Sound Fisheries is working with Kitsap County, local tribes, natural resource agencies and the community to study the opportunity to restore vital salmon habitat that was lost when the Point No Point Lighthouse was constructed in 1879 and a dyke and tide gate were installed. Allowing saltwater to flush back into the wetlands again will provide juvenile chinook salmon from Puget Sound a rest stop and feeding area as they migrate along the shoreline to Admiralty Inlet and the Strait of Juan de Fuca out to the ocean.
The project is funded by the state's Estuary and Salmon Restoration Program and the Salmon Recovery Funding Board.
