There’s an autumnal freshness in the air, school shoes have been chosen and holiday projects completed… September brings the beginning of the new school year, as well as the end of the Summer Reading Challenge!
Gadgeteers finishes on Saturday 10 September, leaving just over a week for children to collect a certificate and medal. As there was no target for the number of books to read this year, we hope this means lots more children will be able to celebrate their reading achievements.
For environmental reasons, we decided to gift wooden medals this year, and we’ve received some great feedback about these from families.
Visit your local library to pick up the final rewards before we close next Saturday, and don’t forget to proudly show your new teachers on return to school – they’ll be so impressed!
Every year we like to ask for feedback at the end of the Summer Reading Challenge, both from children who have taken part and their parents/carers.
What did you think of the theme and rewards this year? What impact has the challenge had on your child’s reading? Is there anything you would like to happen differently next year?
Please let us know what you thought of Gadgeteers by filling in one of our comments forms at the library when collecting your medal and certificate. Alternatively, you can email us your feedback. We read every single comment and always take them into consideration when planning the following year.
Meet a family who set themselves a ‘summer library challenge’ with a difference…
Benjamin, Michael, and their mum Becky signed up for Gadgeteers at the beginning of the summer. To save on holiday costs, Becky planned days out around West Sussex, with the aim to visit every single library, returning and taking out new books as they went.
The boys love travelling on trains and buses and have enjoyed looking around each library, as well as discovering new parks, beaches and towns. Their aim is to visit all 36 West Sussex libraries by the end of the year.
Staff across the county have enjoyed meeting this family and hope that their fun challenge will inspire others next summer!
It’s back-to-school time for many children, but that shouldn’t mean the end of regular trips to the library!
Visiting the library and borrowing books all year round is a great way of supporting your child’s learning and imagination outside of the classroom. Not only is it a free activity; the library offers a world of opportunity for children whether they are confident readers or not. If your child does go to school, they may make a bonus visit to the library with their class this year too.
We are constantly refreshing our stock and any titles you can’t see on the shelves can be requested free of charge on your child’s card. It’s not all about the storybooks either – we’ve got non-fiction, joke books, poetry, comics, audiobooks and even coding kits!
So don’t let their library card lapse after the summer – make visiting the library part of your routine and discover something new!
Have you enjoyed all the fun Gadgeteers events we’ve been running this summer?
Don’t forget that our regular library activities run throughout the year, including Saturday storytimes, board games, multi-sensory sessions for children with additional needs, and weekly rhyme times for under-fives.
We’ll also be holding a programme of special events on a sports theme during October half term, with crafts as well as stories. Check with your local branch that you’re subscribed to our monthly newsletter and be the first to hear about these free activities.
