United Way gives $100,000 to non-profits serving Prince George's residents

Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III joined Rosie Allen-Herring, President and Chief Executive Officer, United Way of the National Capital Area (NCA) in the Media Room of the County Administration Building (CAB) in Upper Marlboro to award seven grants totaling $100,000 to community-based nonprofit organizations serving Prince George’s County.  Grants were awarded to the following organizations:

Housing Options & Planning Enterprises, Inc., St. Ann's Center for Children, Youth and Families, House Of Ruth Maryland, Inc., Food & Friends, Inc., Capital Area Food Bank, Community Support Systems, Inc., and the National Center for Children and Families. To watch the video of this presentation, please click herePHOTO GALLERY. 



CTV News explores the challenges of genealogy research for African Americans

Genealogical Research is the investigation of a particular family's roots or backgrounds. There are several ways of collecting research; word of mouth, reviewing state archives and using sites like familysearch.org. CTV reporter Byron Scott visits the Prince George's Genealogical Society for a how-to course on genealogical research. This video segment explores the challenges for African Americans who want to trace their roots beyond 1870 because of slavery.



Get your free mulch on April 23

The Department of the Environment will give away free mulch to County residents and employees on April 23. The mulch primarily comes from used Christmas trees that have been shredded. A skid loader is available to load mulch into pickup trucks, or residents may bring their own containers and tools. This event is restricted to non-commercial vehicles, 3/4 ton maximum weight. Baker to discuss African American history

The Prince George's Truth Branch Of The Association For The Study Of African American Life And History (ASALH) is hosting a “Thought Conversation," between Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker and ASALH National President, Dr. Evelyn Brooke Higginbotham, on Sunday, April 10, 2016 @ 3:00 p.m., on the Campus of Prince George’s Community College, Rennie Forum, 301 Largo Road, Largo, Maryland 20774.

County Executive Baker and ASALH National President Higginbotham are history makers themselves, and their lives have witnessed many dynamic moments in African-American History. It is through their lens and a facilitated dialogue that we will recount the moments in history that captured African Americans in thought - while working, creating art, managing politics or fighting for social reforms and civil rights.

Register by April 5 to vote in 2016 Presidential Primary

The next election is the 2016 Presidential Primary Election which will be conducted on April 26, 2016 from 7am-8pm. Early Voting begins on April 14, 2016 and ends on April 21, 2016. Early voting sites will be open from 10am-8pm.

This election marks the initial rollout of Maryland's new voting system which produces a voter-verifiable paper record – a “paper trail” – of each voter’s selections. This was mandated in legislation passed by the General Assembly in 2007, however, funding for a new system was not available until now. Click here for instruction  about how the process works. Dimensions sponsors 3rd Heart & Health Bike Tour

On Saturday, May 21, 2016, Dimensions Healthcare System will host the 3rd Annual Heart & Health Bike Tour. Proceeds from the annual charity bike ride will benefit Bowie Health Center, Laurel Regional Hospital and Prince George’s Hospital Center through the Dimensions Healthcare System Foundations.

This year an anticipated field of 200 cyclists will gear up for the 25-mile (beginners) or 36-mile (experts) routes. Secure your spot at the starting line!
