Wisconsin Businesses: Tell DNR About Your Winter Salt Usage

Salt on sidewalk

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is conducting a survey of businesses regarding their salt use. We are reaching out to snow removal contractors, business owners and facility managers to learn about and gather input on winter maintenance practices.

Generally speaking, long-term data is showing increases in chloride levels in the state’s surface waters. Understanding how businesses use salt in their winter property maintenance will help inform the DNR’s efforts around reducing salt use statewide.

If interested, please complete the survey by Sept. 28, 2022, which should take about five minutes. Complete the survey here.

If you have any questions about this survey, please contact Shannon Haydin at 608-949-0460 or shannon.haydin@wisconsin.gov.

New Webpage and Fact Sheets Available for Owners and Operators of NN Public Water Systems

The DNR’s Drinking Water and Groundwater Program has created a new webpage and fact sheets for Non-Transient Non-Community (NN) owners and operators. These materials were created to help owners and operators prepare for a sanitary survey at their public water system.

  • The new webpage can be found here.
  • The fact sheet about NN Sanitary Surveys can be found here.
  • The fact sheet about Common Issues Found during NN Sanitary Surveys can be found here.

Final Amendments to Air Toxics Standards for Boilers & Process Heaters

On Thursday, July 21st, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized amendments to the National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) for Industrial, Commercial, and Institutional Boilers and Process Heaters. This final action addresses several issues identified by the D.C. Circuit and will protect air quality and public health by reducing emissions of hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) such as formaldehyde, benzene, and polycyclic organic matter. The amendments will also result in reductions in particulate matter, a surrogate for metallic HAPs, by an estimated 586 tons per year and sulfur dioxide by an estimated 1,141 tons per year.

Training Opportunities

Vapor Mitigation Update at Wisconsin Radon Conference September 28

DNR staff will present at the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) Wisconsin Radon Conference in Marshfield on Sept. 28, 2022. The DNR’s presentation will include information on the health risks from chemical vapor intrusion, including the similarities and differences between chemical vapor intrusion and naturally occurring radon.

Conference attendees will have an opportunity to refresh their knowledge base on indoor air quality and radon, gain understanding of current and emerging issues and network to improve statewide collaboration. This conference is intended for soil gas mitigators, state and local health departments, contractors, nonprofits and home inspectors.

Environmental consultants who hire soil gas mitigators for environmental cases are encouraged to share this continuing education opportunity with their contractors. There is overlap in both health risks and solutions to mitigate exposure from chemical vapor intrusion and naturally occurring radon.

The DNR values partnering with the DHS and local health departments regarding risks to human health from environmental contamination.

More information on the one-day conference and a pre-conference training opportunity is available here.
