Councilmember Nehring's November Newsletter

Snohomish County NewsNate Nehring

Dear North County Neighbors,

I hope you enjoyed a fun and Happy Halloween last night. As we enter November, budget is top of mind at the County Council. In this month’s newsletter I will provide an update on the 2023 budget process, my drug treatment ordinance, and highlights from a couple of events throughout the district.

2023 Budget Update

In my last newsletter, I shared that we had received the County Executive’s recommended budget and would begin the Council’s deliberations on the budget.

In early October, we received budget presentations from each of the County departments, courts, and offices outlining their budget requests and the revenues and expenditures included in the Executive’s recommended budget.

Since then, we have had discussions as a Council regarding the Council amendment to the budget. The Council amendment includes items that have received broad consensus including additional FTEs for the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office to help address rising crime rates. The Council amendment also includes an additional judge for Cascade District Court in Arlington. This additional judge was requested by the Court to keep up with the growing caseload in the Cascade Division, particularly since they are now handling cases from the City of Arlington.

I have introduced an additional amendment to remove the 1% property tax increased proposed by the Executive. This amendment identifies savings by reducing expenditures in various departments to offset the revenue from a tax increase.
