What:

In a surprise ceremony, the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) and Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman will present the 2023 Kentucky Education Support Staff Professional (KESSP) Award to a classified employee in Calloway County. The award was created in 2020 at the state level by Gov. Andy Beshear and. Lt. Gov. Coleman to recognize the state’s classified school employees.

Kentucky has more than 46,000 classified school employees, who are those other than certified teachers and administrators, such as bus drivers, nurses, computer technicians and programmers, clerical, food service and maintenance workers.

The winner’s name will be forwarded to U.S. Department of Education (USED) for consideration for the national Recognizing Inspirational School Employees (RISE) Award. The winner will be announced by the U.S. Secretary of Education in spring 2023.

The RISE award, which recognizes classified school employees who have displayed excellence in serving students, was passed by Congress in 2019 and is overseen by the USED.
