EDC-7: Nighttime Visibility for Safety

The nighttime fatality rate on the Nation's roadways is three times the daytime rate, and 76 percent of pedestrian fatalities occur at night. Enhancing visibility between drivers and other road users will save lives of all road users.

Many countermeasures and approaches exist to increase the visibility of vehicles and travelers outside of vehicles. Some areas and conditions are more prone to nighttime fatalities--intersections, pedestrians and bicyclists, and roadway departures.

Throughout the next two years, the EDC-7 Nighttime Safety for Visibility Team will be working with State and local DOTs to implement cost-effective and proven lighting and traffic control device countermeasures with known safety benefits, with the goal of reducing nighttime fatalities for all road users.

We invite you to attend the Every Day Counts - 7 Virtual Summit on February 14-16, 2023.
