Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

A lot can happen in one year. We started 2022 by breaking ground on a new grocery store at Skyland Town Center in Ward 7. Today, people are shopping for groceries at that Lidl. In January, we also opened the COVID Centers, making access to COVID tests and vaccines easier than ever. Since we opened the doors, more than 92,000 COVID vaccines and 21,000 flu shots have been administered across all eight wards. In February, we broke ground on the new hospital in Ward 8. Today, if you go by St. Elizabeths, you'll see the steel beams of the future Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center, GW Health.

Now, we head into 2023 ready to continue our comeback — ready to take on some of our biggest challenges. In 2023, we'll stay focused on ending gun violence, reimagining our downtown, fighting for the middle class, getting all students back on track, expanding democracy, and building a resilient and sustainable DC. We will stay focused on ensuring every Washingtonian has a fair shot.

I hope to see you in the coming days, either at our New Year's Eve celebration, the Fresh Start 5K, or inauguration.

Happy New Year, DC.

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser

Christmas Tree Collection

Tree Collection

Residents are reminded that Christmas trees and holiday greenery will be collected between Tuesday, January 3 and Friday, March 3. This year, trees and greenery will be collected from the front of residences that receive DPW services. Remove ornaments and lights before putting your tree out to be composted.

Trees and greenery are typically collected by DPW crews within five days of set out. After March 3, composting is not guaranteed for trees and greenery because they are then collected with residential trash.

Upcoming Deadline: DC Futures Scholarship

DC Futures

With an application deadline approaching, Mayor Bowser is encouraging college-bound DC residents to apply for tuition and education support through the DC Futures Program, which is currently offering scholarships for the spring and summer 2023 semesters. The DC Futures Program provides eligible residents with scholarships to attend one of three approved local universities: The Catholic University of America, Trinity Washington University, or the University of the District of Columbia. The program also provides coaching support and stipends to students to address the wide range of needs that college students face.

DC Futures provides a scholarship of up to $4,000 for a selected applicant for the spring and summer semesters, and up to $8,000 each year for a selected applicant who is pursuing their first college degree in a high-demand career field at the three partner universities. Participants must be enrolled in specific high-demand majors to be eligible.

Eligible residents can apply for the program here by the deadline of Friday, January 6, 2023 by 3 pm.
