What is the West Sussex Safeguarding Adults Board?

Safeguarding Adults Boards (SABs) have been set up in every Local Authority. SABs are a multi-agency partnership that lead on adult safeguarding across its locality, and oversee and coordinate the effectiveness of the safeguarding work of its members and partner agencies. The West Sussex SAB is led by Independent Chair, Annie Callanan.

The overarching purpose of a SAB is to help and safeguard adults with care and support needs. It does this by:

  • assuring itself that local safeguarding arrangements are in place as defined by the Care Act 2014 and statutory guidance
  • assuring itself that safeguarding practice is person-centred and outcome-focused
  • working collaboratively to prevent abuse and neglect where possible
  • ensuring agencies and individuals give timely and proportionate responses when abuse or neglect have occurred
  • assuring itself that safeguarding practice is continuously improving and enhancing the quality of life of adults in its area

Every SAB has three core duties that it must do in order to fulfil its statutory requirements. These are:

Policies

How do we support your practice?

If you're a professional working with, or coming into contact with, adults with care and support needs, our Policy and Protocols webpages contains safeguarding policies and procedures, which should inform and underpin your work.

This section of our website is split into two sections. The first section contains core safeguarding policies and protocols, which we hope you will familiarise yourself with:

  • Safeguarding Thresholds
  • Sussex Escalation and Resolution Protocol
  • Sussex Information Sharing Guide and Protocol
  • Sussex Safeguarding Adults Policy and Procedures

The second section contains procedures and protocols relating to more specific areas of safeguarding practice, including:

  • Multi Agency Risk Management (MARM) Protocol
  • Safeguarding Adult Review (SAR) Protocol
  • Self-Neglect Procedure
  • Sussex Adult Death Protocol

Please use our Policy and Protocols webpages as a reference point for key safeguarding information and guidance. Please also share these pages widely with others in your organisation.

Learning

Where can you learn more about adult safeguarding?

To support your Continual Professional Development (CPD) we have also created a wide range of learning resources.

Much like our Policy and Protocols webpage, these learning resources are split into three sections within our Learning and Podcasts webpages:

These resources include learning briefings, podcasts, and recorded presentations, making them ideal for a variety of learning styles, as well as individual or group learning.

To accompany these learning resources, we have a CPD Reflective Log for your use. Please feel free to use this to track, and reflect on, the professional development that you complete using our resources.

Learning from Safeguarding Adult Reviews (SARs)

The Care Act 2014 states that Safeguarding Adult Boards have a statutory responsibility to arrange a SAR when an adult dies as a result of abuse or neglect (whether known or suspected), and where there is concern that agencies could have worked more effectively together to protect the adult.

The overall purpose of a SAR is to promote learning and improve practice. To support this, in addition to the SAR reports that we publish, we also publish learning resources for each SAR, including learning briefings and podcasts. It is important that staff read and learn from SARs to improve practice and minimise future risk for adults in West Sussex.

You can find all of our published SARs, as well as accompanying learning resources, on the Safeguarding Adult Reviews page on our website.

Please note that we have recently published our Safeguarding Adults Review in respect of Beverley. To make a difference and ensure there is learning, please read our Review along with our accompanying Learning Briefing and 6 minute Podcast, and share with staff in your organisations.
