Non-Invasive, Low-Cost Gas Submeter

If you missed our latest webinar on a Green Proving Ground (GPG) assessment of a non-invasive, low-cost gas submeter, a recording of the webinar and presentation slides are now available.

Thanks to all the presenters and to the participants for their thoughtful questions, some of which are answered below:

Q: Do you need to notify your utility before installing the gas submeter?

A:  Yes. It’s a good idea to confirm with your local utility before installing the submeter. However, utilities should not have a problem with it because it's non-invasive and doesn't interrupt the gas flow.

Q: Does the submeter need to be connected to an existing meter?

A:  Yes. The submeter needs to be connected to an existing meter.

Q:  Does the approximate $3,000 cost in the study include time spent by GSA staff for installation and programming?

A:  Yes. The $3,000 cost included equipment costs as well as installation and programming time.

Q:  Can this submeter also measure water use?

A:  Yes. The technology measures gas and water, but the pilot only evaluated it for gas. The GSA GPG team is planning to evaluate the water use case, and the results should be ready in the fall.

Q:  What was your timeframe to get the software whitelisted through your Cybersecurity team?

A:  Cyber clearance took approximately one month, and the submeter has been approved for use by GSA.

Q:  Could you expand on why monitoring an existing meter is beneficial? Is it primarily for verification of the utility's meter readings?

A:  Monitoring an existing meter can help meet GSA policy goals and support EISA reporting requirements. Real-time data can also help find anomalies, leaks, and/or misuse by comparing trend data for when equipment is running compared to when gas is flowing.

Q:  Is the submeter that was evaluated commercially available?

A:  Yes. The non-invasive, low-cost submeter we evaluated was provided by Vata Verks. For more information, contact the manufacturer directly: Alex Cheimets, acheimets@vataverks.com.
