Dear Friends, 

I hope this newsletter finds you well. Please join myself and 5th Ward Ald. Delores Holmes for a joint 2nd and 5th Ward meeting on Thursday, June 11, 7 p.m., at the J.E.H. Education Center/School District 65, located at 1500 McDaniel Ave. The meeting will include an opportunity to address any questions or concerns regarding the reorganization of City departments and planning efforts for 2016. Please see City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz's statement for more information.

Also this month, I encourage you to join us at the many exciting, upcoming Juneteenth celebration events in our 2nd and 5th Wards. More information about these events can be found in the newsletter below.

On Monday, June 8, from 7:45 a.m. to 9:15 a.m., join the Evanston Chamber of Commerce and the State of Illinois Comptroller's office's POWER Initiative at the Rotary International Building, 1560 Sherman Ave., for a free workshop for small businesses.

Each year, Illinois purchases more than $10 billion in goods and services. State agencies and universities seek bids from small and minority-owned businesses. At this free workshop, you'll learn about:

  • Over 100 state contract projects for small businesses available on the North Shore
  • How to become certified with POWER
  • Get access to the Illinois Procurement Gateway

Celebrate Juneteenth & Father's Day in the 2nd & 5th Wards


2nd & 5th Ward Juneteenth Gathering Thursday, June 18

I invite all community members to join us on Thursday, June 18 for a special Juneteenth Gathering at Twiggs Park, located at Dodge Ave. and Simpson St. The event will feature food trucks beginning at 5:30 p.m., followed by a Starlight Concert featuring Blue Train from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.


Evanston Own It: "Evanston Sings" Concert Friday, June 19

Please join members of Evanston's faith community on Friday, June 19, 7 p.m., at ETHS, for "Evanston Sings," a 250-voice choir concert. The event is a part of the "Evanston Own It" proclamation, which aims to reclaim communities from youth violence. All proceeds from the concert will be donated to the 2016 Mayor’s Summer Youth Employment Program.


Gibbs-Morrison Cultural Center Dedication Saturday, June 20

Forrest E. Powell Foundation Juneteenth Jubilee Celebration: "Why Not Me? A Sammy Davis Jr. Story" Saturday, June 20

Join the Forrest E. Powell Foundation on Saturday, June 20, 5 p.m., for the 2015 Juneteenth Day Jubilee! The event will take place at the Noyes Cultural Arts Center, and will feature traditional outdoor barbecue, strawberry soda, live music, and Fleetwood-Jourdain Theatre's production of "Why Not Me? A Sammy Davis Jr. Story" at 7 p.m. Tickets are available in advance for $50 ($160 for a group of four), and $60 at the door. More >>>

City of Evanston block party applications are available online, and should be submitted at least 10 business days prior to your planned event. I'm looking forward to a great summer in our community!


Purple Line Express Pilot Runs through Friday, July 10

Purple Line

The CTA has begun a six-week pilot program to test an additional weekday evening round-trip Purple Line Express train between Linden in Wilmette and the Loop. The purpose of the pilot is to address a need for later express service for employers in Evanston, as well as Chicago. The pilot will run through Friday, July 10. More >>>
