The Opportunity:  
 
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is looking for someone who shares our passion for growth and development. We are in search of an experienced roadway design engineer who has an exceptional aptitude for managing projects. The Northwest Region Project Engineering Office, located in Shoreline, is looking for a project manager who will be responsible for performing design work, reviewing design work and administering consultant agreements involved with the preparation of various engineering documents. This role provides consultants and support staff guidance and direction regarding WSDOT standards and procedures as well as reviews documentation to ensure that designs meet standard practices. This position will not be directly supervising staff, but will manage and work collaboratively with consultants and contractors to ensure design project deliverables are met. As part of our team, you will have an impact on the infrastructure at WSDOT, and support the well-being of individuals traveling throughout Washington State.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the TE3 will:

  • Provide oversight of a team of technical engineers and engineering consultants in the development and delivery projects.
  • Oversee scope, schedule and budget issues affecting the project.
  • Make recommendations based on project management judgment, experience, knowledge and technical background. Examples could include interpretation of contract documents, material substitutions, and changes to technical requirements.
  • Work closely with WSDOT support groups, engineering consultants and Design-Build contractors to ensure compliance and resolve contract issues as needed.
  • Identify and manage project and delivery risks.
  • Ensure that projects are managed in accordance with WSDOT policy and procedures.
  • Ensure that projects are delivered in an environmentally responsible manner consistent with applicable laws.
  • Represent WSDOT at meetings with consultants, contractors and local agencies.
  • Other duties as assigned

Required qualifications include:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or an Engineer in Training (EIT) certification.
  • 1 year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 2 performing roadway design work or equivalent experience.
  • Proficient knowledge of project management practices.
  • Excellent communications skills; both written and verbal.
  • Ability to independently or as part of a team make public presentations.
  • Valid driver's license.

Highly desirable qualifications:
  • 2 or more years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 2 performing roadway design work or equivalent experience.
  • Washington Professional Engineer (PE) License in Civil Engineering or another state in the US. License holders from other states will be expected to obtain a WA state PE license within 3 months of employment.

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
 
State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).  New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs.  For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems' web site.
 
Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
 
Vacation (Annual Leave)
 
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.
