Fourth Annual Forestry Forum Provides A Day of Stellar Presentations for Woodland Owners, Wood Industry Professionals, and Conservationists

Maine Woodland Owners is pleased to be hosting its fourth annual Forestry Forum on Wednesday January 15, 2020 during the 2020 Maine Agricultural Trades Show at the Augusta Civic Center. The event is open to the public and is Maine Woodland Owners’ largest indoor event of the year.

Over 300 attendees, made up of woodland owners, forestry professionals, government officials, and conservationists, are expected at the Forestry Forum. Along with informative speakers, the program offers opportunity for networking and is one of the best ways participants can connect with colleagues and friends related to woodland ownership and stewardship.

The day will start at 8:30 am with Maine Woodland Owners’ annual meeting and will be followed by presentations with perspectives and up-to-date information about invasive plants and insects impacting forests, how climate change affects Maine’s woods, new opportunities emerging in the wood products market, and observing and writing about nature.

Nancy Olmstead, Invasive Plant Biologist with the Department of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry, will present a talk entitled “How to Manage Invasive Plants in Your Woods with the Maine Invasive Plants Field Guide”.  She’ll introduce the new Maine Invasive Plants Field Guide, a publication that promotes the identification and control of the top invasive plants in Maine. Allison Kanoti, State Entomologist, will provide the latest information about the emerald ash borer infestation in Maine and highlight some of the other pests and diseases that affect our woodlands in the state now, or may in the future.

Dr. Josh Henry, CEO of GO Lab, will speak about an aspect of Maine’s new forest economy. Go Lab is a Belfast-based company who recently opened a plant that manufactures products from wood residuals at a former paper mill in Madison.

The keynote speaker will be Bernd Heinrich, a professor emeritus in the biology department at the University of Vermont who lives on 500 acres of woodlands outside of Weld and has written over 20 books about the Maine woods, nature, and biology. His most recent book White Feathers: The Nesting Lives of Tree Swallows, will be released January 2020 and will be available for purchase at the event.

Dr. Ivan Fernandez, Distinguished Maine Professor of the Climate Change Institute & School of Forest Resources at the University of Maine, will begin the afternoon session with information about the impacts of climate change on Maine’s woodlands. His work has focused on how to accommodate the current and anticipated changes and how to identify and promote the new ecological and economic opportunities that the inevitable change will provide.

Maine Woodland Owners was formed in 1975 as an educational organization dedicated to providing knowledge and technical support for Maine’s small woodland owners. Their goal is to increase landowner engagement and long-term stewardship to ensure the health of Maine's forests. Maine Woodland Owners is the only statewide organization supporting Maine’s 86,000 family woodland owners

The Forestry Forum will be held in the Augusta Room, 2nd Floor, North Wing. Catered lunch of pizza and salad will be available for purchase for $7.00 in the meeting room. Door prizes and a silent auction with unique items appealing to woodland owners and stewards, alike will be available throughout the day.
