Hi, my name is Brian Frisina, DCYF ESIT Tribal Support Specialist. Each week, I will provide a key term to help support us all in getting to know our Tribal Nations partners better.
This week’s term is: Declaration of Indigenous Peoples of the Western Hemisphere.
We are the original peoples of the Western hemisphere of the continents of North, Central and South America. Our principles are based upon our profound belief in the sacredness of all Creation, both animate and inanimate. We live in a reciprocal relationship with all life in this divine and natural order.
Our responsibility as Indigenous Peoples is to ensure the continuity of the natural order of all life is maintained for generations to come.
We have a responsibility to speak for all life forms and to defend the integrity of the natural order.
In carrying out these responsibilities, we ensure that all life in its natural process and diversity continues in a reciprocal relationship with us.

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. June 19, 1865, was when the news of the end of the Civil War and President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation reached the enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas.
Today, Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment, self-improvement and for planning the future.
Please read Gov. Inslee’s Proclamation on Juneteenth.
Check out further information on Juneteenth on the Blacks United In Leadership & Diversity (BUILD) website. Please also find an extensive list of books and articles on racial justice, diversity and inclusivity, unconscious bias and much more on the BUILD website under Resources.
