U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs national cemeteries resumed committal services June 9 at all Florida VA national cemeteries.
Interments will be offered the option of a committal service at the time of interment. Military funeral honors, customarily provided by the Department of Defense and volunteer honor guards, will be based on local availability.
VA national cemeteries are continuing adherence to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by limiting the number of individuals attending committal services, practicing physical distancing between individuals not from the same household, ensuring all attendees and employees wear face coverings, encouraging frequent use of hand sanitizer and asking sick individuals to stay home. Families may continue to choose direct interment and opt for a memorial service later when all restrictions have been lifted.
For more information, visit the National Cemetery Administration. To make burial arrangements at any VA national cemetery contact the National Cemetery Scheduling Office at (800) 535-1117.
TALLAHASSEE -- With more than 600 attendees and 2,000 replays this week, Veterans Florida officials are deeming their June 18 Virtual Expo a success.
“Part virtual career fair, part entrepreneur pitch competition, part resource exhibition, the Veterans Florida Virtual Expo offered everything that veterans and their families need to know about working and living in Florida,” said Joe Marino, executive director of Veterans Florida.
Veterans Florida is a non-profit created by the State of Florida to help military veterans transition to civilian life and to promote Florida’s status as the nation’s most veteran-friendly state.
The Virtual Expo, presented by Bank of America, is available online here.
WASHINGTON – Acting VA Deputy Secretary Pamela Powers on Tuesday led VA’s first virtual Women Veterans Forum, which helped women veterans from across the country learn about the care and services they can receive at VA, and how VA is changing to better serve the growing population of women veterans.
There are more than 160,000 women veterans in Florida.
“You have a voice in VA, and we’ve learned a lot over the last few years about how to better serve you,” Powers told more than 1,500 women veterans who joined the event by phone or online.
VA has made progress by increasing the range of services available to women, including mental health care that is tailored specifically to women veterans. These changes have resulted in an increase in the trust women veterans have in VA – that trust has grown by 10% for women in the last six months, compared to a 6% increase for men.
Despite that progress, Powers said VA is working hard to make sure women veterans are served well across the entire VA, and she encouraged all women to enroll for the benefits they’ve earned by serving their country. “We’re here for all of our Veterans, and we hope that you choose VA,” she said.
The Women Veterans Forum allowed several women leaders at VA to explain the work they’re doing to ensure all VA facilities are inclusive.
