SAN DIEGO — U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers seized over $2.4 million in currency all across the San Diego Field Office ports of entry, encompassing Calexico, Otay Mesa, Cross Border Xpress, San Ysidro and Tecate.

CBP officers, along with CBP canine teams, were successful in their hard work during outbound operations during a span of three months that included the months of April to June. Their enforcement efforts showed with the successful rate of interceptions of undeclared currency that were being smuggled out of the country.

“These various interdictions by our vigilant officers are just a fraction of the regular attempts we see during the year,” said Pete Flores, Director of Field Operations for CBP in San Diego. “This is a demonstration of our officers’ efforts in stopping the illegal movement between our borders.”

One of the most significant seizures during these three months occurred in May when CBP officers stopped a vehicle at Otay Mesa. During the course of their outbound inspection, they discovered money hidden in boxes commingled with miscellaneous items located in the cargo area of the vehicle.

CBP officers are federal law enforcement officers responsible for enforcing more than 400 laws, with the primary goal being to protect U.S. borders on a daily basis from contraband or illegal activities that can harm the country. Those statistics can be found here: CBP-enforcement-statistics.
