The NHS COVID-19 app launched yesterday, we want to encourage all our residents who own smart phones to download the app in order to help fight COVID-19 and help keep West Berkshire open.
The app:
- Will trace and notify users if they have come into contact with someone who later tests positive for coronavirus.
- Allows people to report symptoms, order a coronavirus test and check in to venues by scanning a QR code.
- Will help the NHS understand if the virus is spreading in a particular area, so local authorities can respond quickly to stop it spreading further and save lives.
- Fully protects a user’s anonymity. Nobody, including the government, will know who or where a particular user is.
To download the NHS COVID-19 app, search for “NHSCOVID-19” in the Apple Store or Google Play Store on your phone. By downloading and using the app, you’ll be helping protect those around you – friends, family, colleagues and local communities.

On Tuesday the government announced further measures and guidance in order to slow the spread of COVID-19 in the UK.
These changes included:
- Changing guidance to ask people to work from home where they can
- Reducing the list of exemptions to the ‘rule of six’ and introducing higher fines for people breaking the rule of six or failing to wear a face covering where required
- Expanding the settings in which face coverings are required (If you are exempt from wearing a face covering you may feel more comfortable showing something that says you do not have to wear a face covering. This is a personal choice and not necessary in law. Examples of exemption cards can be found here)
- Placing new restrictions on operating hours for hospitality, leisure, entertainment and tourism businesses
For more information you can read the updated guidance published on 22 September here.
Now that children have returned to school, it can be difficult to know what to do if your child feels unwell. We’ve produced this quick guide for parents with help and advise on the action they should take.

We’re working together with Reading and Wokingham Borough Councils to create a new stop smoking service for Berkshire, and need your views and experiences on how best to support people to quit smoking.
Covid-19 is a respiratory infection and the symptoms can be more severe if you smoke. Now is a better time than ever to quit for good.
We know 60% of people who currently smoke want to quit, and with the right support, a smoker is up to four times more likely to successfully quit than if they attempted alone.
Your feedback will shape the future of our stop smoking support. Tell us what you think by taking part in our survey before 4 October.
For a print version of the survey please contact: Publichealthandwellbeing@westberks.gov.uk
