The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Eastern Region has an exciting opportunity for a talented and innovative engineer to join their dynamic team in Spokane, WA. This position will apply standard engineering procedures and techniques in support of WSDOT design and construction projects in the office, laboratory, and field. This position will perform the following work:

  • May serve as a lead inspector on small to large scale projects or inspector on phases of larger projects.
  • Inspect the contractors work for conformance to plans, specifications and special provisions.
  • Direct the submittal of all pay notes and figures pertaining to force account making sure all are into the office in a timely manner.
  • Track quantities, costs, and workforce to stay within budget.
  • May perform or direct material testing for acceptance in the field or lab trailer.
  • Serve as a designer performing a variety of skilled project development work.
  • Use personal computer to produce Special Provisions, Ebase estimates, Structure Notes and Quantity Tabulations.
  • Calculate and check quantities for contract bid items.
  • Aid in the design of intersections, cross sections, signing and estimating quantities utilizing traffic counts, the Design Manual, and the Construction Manual.
  • Schedule and direct the surveying on medium scope projects.
  • Oversee the operation, adjustment, and maintenance of all types of survey equipment.
  • Make computations and compile field data.
  • Directs layout and measurement surveys for construction projects.
  • Communicate both orally and in writing, and work in a cooperative and courteous manner with the design team, project offices, public, contractors, supervisors, and other department staff.
  • Train and lead team members.
  • Other duties as assigned.
 
Required qualifications include:
  • Current certificate of completion of Western Alliance for Quality Transportation Construction (WAQTC) qualified tester or the ability to obtain within 24 months of hire.
  • The ability to inspect construction projects, occasionally out of town and at night.
  • Solid understanding of engineering principles and mathematical formulas.
  • The ability to read, interpret, understand, and apply information in WSDOT manuals.
  • The ability to prepare and check calculations and field note records.
  • Proficient use of computer, including the ability to produce engineering drawings and specifications using computer aided drafting software applications.
  • The ability to operate survey equipment.
  • The ability to traverse uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
  • The ability to transport, manipulate, and move into position materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Strong communication skills both in the written and verbal form.
  • Ability to operate a motorized vehicle and maintain a valid driver's license.

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
 
State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).  New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs.  For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems' web site.
 
Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
 
Vacation (Annual Leave)
 
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.
