The Opportunity:  
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Coal Creek Maintenance Facility near Sedro Woolley, WA is looking for someone to take on the Maintenance Technician Lead responsibilities and provide direction and support to safely coordinate work activities for their team. This experienced technician leads by example and has a personal commitment to safety while working actively with the crew to perform required maintenance, often in close proximity to high volume, high speed traffic. Along with the proven ability to fill in as the supervisor during the supervisor's absence, we need someone to take ownership and use experience with technology for completing daily reports of events that occur.
 
Due to the nature of this work, the Maintenance Technician Lead must also be able to perform hard physical labor such as moving and transporting heavy objects, negotiating rough and steep terrain, working in confined spaces, operating heavy equipment, and working in extreme weather conditions to perform snow and ice removal functions during winter months.  Maintenance activities include pothole repair, vegetation control, guardrail repair, roadside residual program, inventory control and all ESA issues. 
 
This position will perform the following work:

  • Patrol and inspect assigned highway and perform a variety of maintenance tasks to help keep roads usable and safe for the traveling public.
  • Operate trucks to 54,000 GVW equipped with snow plow and sanding equipment and other related highway maintenance equipment.
  • Lead, supervise, and train assigned employees in safe and efficient highway maintenance operations.
  • Maintain roadways and drainage systems, clean and maintain culverts, sweep roadway shoulders.
  • Interact with the traveling public in a professional and positive manner.
  • Design and set up traffic control for road and bridge closures following departmental and MUTCD standards.
  • Plan, layout, and establish and perform traffic control functions.
  • Other duties as assigned.
 
The requirements for this position are:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience performing similar roadway maintenance or heavy equipment operation.
  • A current non-restricted Class A Manual Transmission CDL with N endorsement.
  • A valid CDL medical card.
  • Washington State Pesticide Applicator's License or be able to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
  • Possess intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite programs including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Skills to communicate effectively with diverse groups utilizing oral, written, and electronic communication methods.
  • Ability to respond to emergency call outs, work different and/or extended shifts on short notice (days, nights and weekends), and perform standby duty on a rotational basis.
  • Ability to move and lift objects weighing in excess of 50 pounds in a safe manner and safely traverse uneven and steep terrain.

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation

Vacation (Annual Leave)
 
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.
