The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking WSDOT is currently seeking a Property and Acquisition Specialist 1 (PAS) Intern position located in Tumwater. In this role you will learn and assist with negotiations, property management, relocation assistance, appraisals, title examinations, and/or property inspections. Interns gain knowledge and experience by learning the laws and principles covering real estate transactions, how to apply appraisal principles and techniques, research methods, interpret legal and/or property descriptions, collect statistical data, and/or maintain public relations.

What to Expect
Under the direct guidance and mentorship of an experienced Property & Acquisition Specialist, PAS Intern will assist in a variety of entry-level duties, to include:

  • Assist in the preparation and maintenance of property records.
  • Review and prepare real estate documents/records for scanning.
  • May Initiate, review, and perform property management functions related to leasing and disposal.
  • Prepare legal descriptions and a variety of legal instruments necessary to acquire rights of way.
  • Make IRIS (Real Estate Database) entries as necessary.
  • Assist Senior Agents in negotiations with property owners for the purchase of property rights.
 
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • Completion of at least two semesters or three quarters of study in business or public administration, real estate, economics, accounting or closely related field.
  • Proficient use of computers and computer software (such as Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, FileMaker Pro and PowerPoint.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to job sites throughout assigned geographic area.
 
It is preferred that qualified candidates are also:
  • Currently enrolled and pursuing a degree in any of the fields indicated above. (Preference will be given to third and fourth year students)

  • Internships are temporary employment opportunities, expected to last 3 – 6 months, for students working toward an undergraduate degree (RCW 43.06.420).

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
 
State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).  New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs.  For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems' web site.
 
Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
 
Vacation (Annual Leave)
 
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.
