Summary

The Department of Human Resources (DHR) seeks an experienced Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) professional to join our fast-paced, dynamic team.
 
The Office of Alternative Dispute Resolution provides early resolution of workplace conflicts through a variety of services that include mediating and facilitating complex work place and public interest disputes, training in conflict resolution, communication and negotiation, facilitating collective bargaining discussions, and chartering and facilitating labor management committees. The ADR Program is dedicated to creating new products that support the responsible stewardship of County resources by reducing the cost of conflict for King County employees, government, tax payers, and regional partners.

The Inter-Local Conflict Resolution Group (ILCRG) is a unique regional program created jointly by the King County Executive and the King County Labor Council in 1998 to provide third party neutral services to resolve conflict. The ILCRG is a leader in regional governance, partnering with over 70 member cities, counties, and other public entities and over 30 unions to provide mediation services.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The ADR Mediator is responsible for providing mediation, facilitation, coaching, and other dispute resolution services for individuals and groups in King County as well as the inter-agency dispute resolution services through the ILCRG.
 
Our ideal candidate will have experience mediating and negotiating skillfully in tough situations in a fair and diplomatic manner. The ADR Mediator must be highly competent in conflict resolution with a passion for pursuing the program's goals with energy and drive.
 

Job Duties

  • Provide conflict case assessment including gathering facts and designing and recommending appropriate conflict resolution processes; perform client intake and conciliation. Manage a caseload.
  • Provide facilitation, mediation, and other conflict resolution services; provide information, problem solving, conflict coaching, conciliation and/or referral to appropriate agency.
  • Design custom curriculum and training on conflict management and conflict resolution; provide training to staff, stakeholders and other mediators. Design and deliver conflict resolution interventions.
  • Manage special projects; may lead small projects or components of larger, more complex projects.
  • Participate in program marketing and outreach; make presentations to individuals and groups; develop and design flyers, brochures, pamphlets and other marketing materials.
  • Prepare written analytical, statistical and program reports.
  • Assist in coordinating the work of volunteer mediators.
  • Recommend and assist in the implementation of ADR program goals and objectives; implement policies and procedures.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key county, union, and regional contacts. 
  • Facilitate work group discussions and labor management committees. 

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

Minimum Qualifications

  • Three (3) years of full time experience providing conflict resolution, coaching, and mediations services and training;
  • A minimum of 100 hours of advanced ADR training;
  • Professional Mediation Certification or the ability to obtain certification within the first six (6) months of employment; OR
 
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work.
 
Other Qualifications
  • Skill in assessing the root causes of conflict including mediation, coaching, facilitation and training; using advanced techniques and strategies to build consensus among people with conflicting points of view; understand what motivates groups; ability to pick up on positions, intentions, and needs and predict what groups will do across different situations.
  • Skill in developing and delivering on cross-functional duties within a team environment.
  • Skill in data base management.
  • Skill in curriculum design and training presentations.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, developments, and trends in inquiry based coaching.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to a variety of audiences in different setting such as one-on-one, small and large groups, and with peers.
  • Comfortable handling hot and controversial topics; ability to manage group processes during a presentation; and ability to change tactics midstream when something isn't working.
  • Skill at working collaboratively as a team member.
  • Knowledgeable about working in large organizations, understands and adapts to the organizational culture; sensitivity to how organizations function; knows how to get things done through formal and informal channels. 
  • Skill in personal assessment of strengths and weakness; seeks and incorporates feedback; gains insight from mistakes; is receptive to talking about short-comings and gaining new skills. Able to model conflict resolution skills.
  • Skill in interactions with a diverse work force; able to adjust processes to support the equitable treatment of all.
  • Skilled at maintaining relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Skilled at dealing with ambiguity; can effectively cope with change; can comfortably handle risk and uncertainty and make decisions without having the total picture. Able to handle multiple competing and priorities; planning, organizing and project management.

Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences or closely related field.
  • International Coach Federation credential (ACC/PCC/MCC).
  • Familiar with collective bargaining principles and practices.
  • Internal resource in a large organization.
