Details

The Chemical Weapons (Sanctions) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019 ensure sanctions relating to chemical weapons are implemented effectively after the UK leaves the EU.

Context

This sanctions regime is aimed at deterring the proliferation and use of chemical weapons. This includes encouraging the effective implementation of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on their Destruction, signed at Paris on 13 January 1993 (“the Chemical Weapons Convention”).

The regulations impose asset freezes to deter those who are, or have been, involved in the proliferation or use of chemical weapons. This extends to those who assist, promote or provide support for such activities.
