Chisholm Trail Bridge Lift

We are writing to inform you of the exciting news that the Abbey-Chesterton Bridge is due to be lifted into place next month.

The bridge installation marks a key step in the delivery of the Chisholm Trail – a joint project between the Greater Cambridge Partnership and Cambridgeshire County Council, which will form Phase 1 of a new foot and cycle route through the city.

As part of these works, the new bridge will be lifted into position during the early hours of 8 November 2020. The full works will be carried out between 8pm-8am on the evening of the 7/8 November. Some disruption may be experienced. Should poor weather prohibit the lift we will let you know of the new date as soon as possible.

Work to site the crane ready for the lift will start from 2 November 2020.

The River Cam and adjacent towpath will be closed from midnight on the 7 November to 8am on the 8 November whilst the bridge is lifted into place.

It is now anticipated that works to create the new underpass of Newmarket Road will be carried out in Spring 2021, with the full trail still to be opened in Autumn 2021.

If you are planning to come along to watch the bridge being lifted in to place please abide by current Covid 19 guidelines and give due regard to social distancing.

Local residents have been notified by letter and the media will be informed.
