On 14 April 2021, Fabio Panetta, ECB Executive Board Member and Chair of the Eurosystem High-Level Task Force on Central Bank Digital Currency, presented in the ECON Committee the results of the ECB public consultation on the digital euro, followed by a discussion with ECON Members.

The public consultation followed the publication of the ECB's report on the digital euro in October 2020, which examined the issuance of a central bank digital currency - the digital euro - from the perspective of the Eurosystem, i.e. the ECB and the central banks of the EU Member States which use the euro as a currency. Such a digital euro would be a central bank liability offered in digital form for use by citizens and businesses for their retail payments. It would complement the current offering of cash and wholesale central bank deposits.
