The European Space Agency (ESA) is currently recruiting new Astronauts for the first time in 11 years.  
The vacancy is currently open and runs until the 28th of May 2021 18 June 2021.
The three-week extension comes as ESA welcomes Lithuania as a new Associate Member state.

To provide Belgian press representatives and the general public with more information about this exciting opportunity for Belgian citizens, ESA and BELSPO will organise an information event in the Brussels area on the 60th anniversary of the first human in space: Monday the 12th of April from 11:00 to 13:00.

The following speakers will contribute in person:

  • Thomas Dermine, State Secretary for Science Policy, Recovery Program and Strategic Investments;
  • Frank De Winne, ESA Astronaut and head of the European Astronaut Centre;

  • Guillaume Weerts, head of the ESA Space Medicine Office;
  • Angelique Van Ombergen, ESA science coordinator for human research.
    [Presentation]

Including video message by Samantha Cristoforetti, ESA Astronaut, scheduled for her second flight to the International Space Station in 2022.

11:00 – 11:40 Information session with all the above speakers
11:40 – 12:00 Q&A (press and general public)
12:00 – 13:00 One to one interviews with the speakers

Please note that due to COVID restrictions only a limited number of press will be able to attend the event in person with the option to have a one to one interview with one of the speakers.
However, registered press attending through the livestream will have an opportunity to ask questions in writing.
