Improved Tools Support Environmental Justice

EPA has improved its TRI Search and TRI Search Plus online tools to make it easier for users to learn about chemical releases from industrial and federal facilities in and near communities across the U.S., particularly for those concerned about environmental justice.

The user-friendly tools show TRI data for a given location, including how chemicals are being managed by facilities in the area, information about potential health effects of the chemicals being released, and facilities’ history of compliance with environmental laws.

Recent Enhancements

• A demographic profile shows the demographics of the population living near TRI facilities by ethnicity, income, education level and other metrics, overlaying demographic indicator data from EPA’s EJSCREEN tool; 
• An EJ Report ranks locations based on certain variables, like proximity to Superfund sites and hazardous waste facilities; and
• Improved interactive maps, customizable tables, charts, and graphs, and printer-friendly handouts.

In addition, new filter options in TRI Search Plus allow users to identify TRI facilities regulated under key environmental laws and facilities located near the U.S.–Mexico border.
