Agriculture Photo Contest

• Submissions

  The Kansas Department of Agriculture began accepting photos and videos for the 2023 Photo Contest in July. Entries must be submitted no later than midnight on Thursday, August 31.

• Categories

  Farm Fresh — Share your best photos of the various crops and produce that help feed Kansans, whether it is locally grown produce being sold at a farmers’ market or the crops that are known and loved in this state. 

  Technology in Agriculture — There are many advancements happening in agriculture right now, including irrigation systems, research, farm equipment and so much more. Show the merging of technology and agriculture. 

  Kansas Critters — From large to small, we love the animals that play a role in agriculture production, from your 4-legged best friends to the wildlife that roams our beautiful land. 

  Kansas Life — Capture what it means to live in Kansas — what makes this land beautiful to you? There are so many moments, places and views that make Kansas perfectly Kansas! 

  Youth - Open to photographers under 19 years of age. Share photos of your experiences growing up on your farm, ranch, or rural area. This is a great opportunity for youth to use their 4-H projects.

  Video – Send your drone views, harvest videos, or any other footage showcasing Kansas agriculture. All video entries must be a maximum of 30 seconds and should not include music or voice overs.
  

• What to Enter

  The Kansas Department of Agriculture is looking for photos showcasing the breadth of agriculture in Kansas. This year features new categories including the return of our video category. The purpose of these categories is to showcase Kansas agriculture in new ways. Only pictures taken in Kansas are eligible to enter the contest.
  
  Photo submissions must not be digitally manipulated or enhanced. Photos that have been altered will be disqualified. Photos that have been edited using Instagram filters will not be accepted. Normal cropping, color correction, etc. are acceptable. Please remove watermarks/trademarks before entering.
  
  Winners will be judged on creativity and photo composition. Photos will be used on the department's website, social media, publications, brochures and may be displayed around the KDA building. Prior submissions to the KDA contest are not eligible for reentry, but photos taken before 2023 are acceptable. 
  
  
  

• How to Enter

  The contest is open to Kansas residents only.
  
  Photo entries should be sent in .jpg format to KDA.PhotoContest@ks.gov. Videos should be sent in .mp4 or .mov format. If video entries are too large to send as an email attachment, try using mail drop, Google drive, or OneDrive. Entries must include:

  • A title and brief description of each photo/video
  • When and where the photo/video was taken
  • Photographer's full name and age
  • Entry category
  • Hometown
  • E-mail address

  Alternately, CDs containing photo files and accompanied by all of the required information may be mailed or hand delivered to:

• Judging Criteria

  The Kansas Department of Agriculture's social media, the Kansas State Board of Agriculture and other leaders in Kansas agriculture will judge photos/videos from each category.
  
  Finalists from each category will be selected based on social media feedback through KDA's Facebook account. Judging will take place in early October. Points will be allocated as follows:
  

  • Likes — 1 point each
  • Comments — 5 points each
  • Reposts/Shares — 10 points each

  
  

• Prizes

  1^st Place in each category will receive a $100 Visa gift card that can be used anywhere.

  2^nd Place in each category will receive a $50 Visa gift card that can be used anywhere.

  Select winning photos will be displayed at the Kansas Department of Agriculture.
  
  

• Terms

  By submitting photos and videos, the photographer gives the Kansas Department of Agriculture permission to use the photos/videos in any publications, social media, websites, displays and other places without payment or other consideration. Additionally, by submitting a photo/video that includes human subjects, the photographer is indicating that they have obtained full permission from those subjects for the photograph to be used in Department medium as well.
