AMO Welcomes Acting Director Dr. Rebecca Jones-Albertus
This month, AMO welcomed our new Acting Director, Dr. Rebecca Jones-Albertus. She takes the lead of our team dedicated to increasing the competitiveness of the U.S. manufacturing & clean energy sectors through process innovations, collaborations, research and development, and technical training. Prior to joining AMO, she spent her career advancing solar technology, from fundamental research and development to advanced manufacturing. Here at the Department of Energy, she previously served as the photovoltaics R&D program manager, Deputy Director, and then Director of the Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO). She graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University with a B.S. in electrical engineering, and holds a M.S. and Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.

Department of Energy Invests $17.9 Million in Long-Duration Energy Storage Technologies
During the Long Duration Storage Shot Summit on September 23, U.S. Department of Energy Deputy Secretary David Turk announced $17.9 million in funding for four research and development projects to scale up American manufacturing of flow battery and long-duration storage systems. This funding will help provide the materials needed to expand the grid with new, clean energy sources, deliver affordable electricity to disadvantaged communities, and help reach the Biden Administration’s goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. DOE Announces New Communities LEAP Opportunity
On September 15, Secretary Granholm introduced Communities LEAP (Local Energy Action Program) – a new pilot initiative that will help environmental justice communities and communities with historical ties to fossil fuel industries develop actions plans to transition to a clean energy future. This program will award up to $16 million in technical assistance to help 24 – 36 communities across the country realize clean energy economic development pathways. Selected communities can receive assistance to engage with existing local manufacturing facilities on energy performance to lower emissions and reduce waste, and identify how local strengths could play a role in manufacturing new clean energy technologies. Communities LEAP is offered jointly by DOE’s Offices of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, Electricity, Policy, Fossil Energy and Carbon Management, and Economic Impact and Diversity. Department of Energy Seeks Clean Energy and Manufacturing Innovators for Lab-Embedded Entrepreneurship Program
DOE recently announced the opening of applications for the 2022 cohorts in its Lab-Embedded Entrepreneurship Program. Innovators selected for this program will join an extensive network of mentors and experts at U.S. National Laboratories to develop the next-generation technologies that will help pave the way to a clean energy future.

Department of Energy Announces $1 Million in Funding for Five New Projects at Cybersecurity Manufacturing Innovation Institute
DOE, in partnership with the Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CyManII), recently announced an over $1 million investment in five projects to help make advanced manufacturing processes and supply chains more cyber-secure. The selected projects will work directly address existing challenges that make advanced manufacturing technologies expensive and difficult to secure. Learn about selected projects.

Join the DOE Better Buildings, Better Plants team on September 30 for a free introduction to the Water Savings Network.
