Have your say on the latest designs for the new hospital and a brighter future for Whipps Cross

We are delighted to share our updated designs for the new Whipps Cross Hospital, surrounded by green spaces and community facilities.

The new hospital at Whipps Cross will provide the same core NHS services as today, including emergency care and maternity. It will offer modern facilities, in better surroundings with more clinical space for doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals to treat patients. It is due to be completed in 2026.

There will be improved patient care and dignity with more single rooms and garden terraces, to improve wellbeing for patients and provide an uplifting environment for staff. The flexible hospital design will be able to adapt to future healthcare demands.

We are building a hospital at the leading edge of environmental sustainability design, striving to deliver the lowest carbon footprint possible by creating a net zero carbon building. The latest designs build on the emerging vision for a new ‘hospital in a garden and a garden in a hospital’ for Whipps Cross, re-establishing connections to Epping Forest.

Incorporating feedback from local people, hospital users and staff at the end of last year, we have changed the designs to ensure the hospital has space to grow in the future. The most valued parts of the existing historic buildings, including the old chapel and pavilions, will be retained and given a new lease of life. This is part of the wider redevelopment of the site to create a new neighbourhood with homes and community facilities.

To create a stronger ‘green’ connection between the hospital and the forest, our latest designs also include a new landscaped route and a new park. Improved car parking for patients, staff and visitors, as well as better access routes with more emphasis on walking and cycling are also being proposed.

We are asking the local community, patients and staff to provide feedback on the latest designs, to help shape the new hospital and wider neighbourhood. A planning application is due to be submitted to Waltham Forest Council this spring.

Alastair Finney, Redevelopment Director, said: “The prospect of a fantastic new hospital in five years’ time is hugely exciting for everyone. We really value people’s feedback which has informed the development of our designs in the last few months. We really hope people will take the time to have their say on our updated plans so that we can ensure our designs meet the needs and aspirations of patients, staff and the public for years to come.”

It all sounds beautiful but unless bed numbers are increasing it will be inadequate for the needs of the local population.
