Newly Approved K-12 Social Studies Standards

On February 4, 2021 the North Carolina State Board of Education approved new content standards for social studies, K-12. The standards define what students are expected to know, understand, and be able to do by the end of each grade or course. Included as a part of the approval of the standards is a preamble written by NC Superintendent of Public Instruction, Catherine Truitt. The preamble states that the standards are a framework intended to teach the full spectrum of history to best help students learn and use the information they acquire in the course of learning experiences.

Although the PDF documents for the newly approved K-12 Standards have been housed on both the DPI website and our Social Studies Google site, all of the K-5 Unpacking, K-12 Glossary, K-12 Crosswalks, and Social Studies Strand documents approved by the State Board of Education, are currently ONLY available on the DPI website. All the new documents will be labeled as Fall 2021 Implementation. If you place the phrase Fall 2021 Implementation into the search box you will find that all the new documents will populate.
