Public Comments Due December 9th for 2021 Draft List of Critical Materials
On November 9, 2021, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) announced that it is seeking public comment on a revised list of critical minerals. The USGS’s draft critical materials list adds nickel and zinc, which are vital materials for electric vehicle batteries.
Under the Energy Act of 2020, a “critical material or mineral” means a material or mineral that serves an essential function in the manufacturing of a product and has a high risk of a supply disruption, such that a shortage of such a material or mineral would have significant consequences for U.S. economic or national security. The Energy Act of 2020 also requires that the critical minerals list and methodology used to identify critical materials is reviewed every three years.
