According to the 2020 Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) National Analysis, air releases of mercury and mercury compounds from industrial and federal facilities have decreased by 64% since 2011, driven by reductions at electric utilities that have switched from burning coal to burning natural gas.
Releases of lead and lead compounds into the air decreased 46% during the same time period, driven by reductions at electric utilities and primary metals facilities.
