The American Journal of Psychiatry recently released a special issue on structural racism and mental health disparities. The issue is devoted to advancing awareness of mental health care disparities and identifying new directions for research in this area. It also highlights mental health inequity research priorities, the pervasive negative consequences of structural racism on mental health, and the importance of community- and system-wide interventions.

The issue was guest-edited by Crystal L. Barksdale, Ph.D., MPH, health scientist administrator/program director at NIMHD, and was developed based on work presented at a 2020 NIMH/NIMHD workshop.

Along with being guest editor, Dr. Barksdale also contributed three articles, including one she co-authored with NIMHD Director Eliseo J. Pérez-Stable, M.D., titled, “Innovative Directions to Advance Mental Health Disparities Research.”
