Land Trust Forester - Maine Woodland Owners

The Maine Woodland Owners (MWO) seeks a full-time Land Trust Forester to manage its land trust holdings (currently over 12,000 acres).

Overall Responsibilities:

  • Standardize operating procedures for the land trust.
  • In coordination with the Land Trust Council, develop a comprehensive plan for all our lands.
  • Negotiate terms and conditions of timber harvesting and administer all aspects of contracts for timber harvest and land management projects.
  • Monitor conservation easements; coordinate boundary line maintenance, establishment, and corrections; fulfill Tree Growth requirements, filings, and tax payments; and maintain use agreements on our lands.
  • Interact with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) regarding cost share activities.
  • Manage a continuous forest inventory system (CFI).
  • Develop and maintain an in-house GIS database of holdings; enhance and maintain our database of properties, including a member-friendly dashboard of parcel information.
  • Act as a resource for the development and maintenance of MWO carbon credit program.
  • In coordination with the Deputy Executive Director, develop a volunteer stewards program.
  • Answer questions about forestry topics from MWO members and the public, especially concerning the Tree Growth Tax Law; participate in forestry-specific educational events sponsored by MWO; Contribute articles to Maine Woodlands newsletter.
  • Provide occasional support to legislative advocacy efforts.

Desirable Qualifications:

  1. We seek an experienced candidate currently licensed as a forester in Maine or who, based on work experience, can become licensed within three months from the date of hire.
  2. Ability to become a NRCS Technical Service Provider by hire or shortly after.
  3. Knowledge of and experience with GIS systems software and hardware (ArcGIS Pro).
  4. A strong interest in developing expertise in Maine’s Tree Growth Tax Law.
  5. Demonstrated excellence in organizational, managerial, interpersonal, and written communication skills, including the ability and desire to independently conduct member workshops and trainings.

Location: 

The position is based in Augusta, with flexibility for working remotely when appropriate.
